Gems from 2014

It has been one of the richest years of my life. It was my birthday less than 2 weeks ago and as I reminisce and go into the different seasons I went through, I can pick out several lessons to hang on to!!

1) God is real. He reveals Himself to whoever allows Him to. He even reveals Himself when we have not allowed Him to because He is God and He LOVES human beings wholeheartedly. He has never been as real to me as he has been this year. I have heard Him, I have felt Him, I have seen Him at work and I am convinced that He is real! He is the reason I wake up and face life everyday even when nothing else makes sense. He created me intentionally and has my life in His hands! 🙂

2) Family is very important. It may seem like you have the best friends in the world but nothing can compare to family. They are blood! You share blood! Blood! 😀 So creepy and so amazing at the same time. They may be imperfect. They may get on your nerves and even hurt you sometimes but they are part of you. Keep them close. Check up on them regularly. Pray for them. Laugh with them. Get to know them better. Spend time with them and tell them you love them. They will not be there one day so treasure them today!

3) Love is a gift from God. I am amazed at how falling in love happens. I have seen people who are in love with the most ‘unlovable’ people. I have seen people with the most beautiful hearts but have not found love yet. I even have a girlfriend who has never ever been approached by a man. She is 26 years old and not once! I also know good men who just experience one rejection after another. My conclusion from this is that love is a gift from God. He is the one who brings people together just like He hooked up Eve and Adam. He draws hearts to each other. Cupid has nothing on God. If you have found love thank God for it. If you have not stop stressing and scheming and just trust God for it. The thing about a gift is that the giver can also withhold it….. food for thought…

4) Age is catching up. We should enjoy being young while we are young. I have been watching my friends and it is fascinating how hairlines are slowly receding, weight control is not easy anymore, more teeth are coming off (lol), saving and planning is a serious topic, marriage and children …you know what I mean? We are all growing up real fast and the changes are fascinating. Let everyone take in all the beauty of the season they are in! The season will not come back! 🙂

5) Loving people without expecting anything in return. This still sounds crazy to me as it does to you! lol!! It is true though! Very true! This was a source of pain for me like I have explained in a post before. However, through much thought, discussion and prayer I have come out with this gem of truth: Love without expecting anything in return. Give if your heart wants to give. Give as much as you desire to give… your time, your money, your love, your smile, anything. Give even to strangers! Do not hold back because the other party will not return the favor. It naturally feels so good to give! It feels even more awesome when we kill the expectation to be rewarded for our giving. Give passionately and in the end God gives you 1 or 2 people who will surprise you with the same passionate love for you. That is what has happened to me. I have stopped expecting back and God has gifted me with a few friendships that blows me away. Above all God himself overwhelms me with His friendship. He has opened me up to His love and it is too satisfying!! Not even your husband or wife can satisfy you like God does. He is the true satisfaction! The living water!!! Try it! 🙂

6) Loving oneself is crucial. I have known myself, accepted myself and loved myself this year more than I ever have before. It is an everyday journey so I am still on it but all I know is that it is so liberating to be comfortable in my own skin. It is the key to loving other people because as much as it sounds cliche, we only start to truly love people when we love ourselves. I went back to the roots. What makes Ndanu happy, what makes Ndanu angry, what gets Ndanu down, what does Ndanu love… Another important question is why. Why do I react this way and that? Why did I say that? Why did I think that? Truthfully asking such questions takes you inside…to a place we seldom visit. That’s where the true you lies. Go there and prepare to deal with not so pretty things…. Allow God into that place. It is humbling, liberating, ugly and beautiful all at the same time. TRUE Love for self buds from there. A place with no masks!! 🙂

7) Stop saying I CAN’T. I have experienced this scripture first hand this year, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. I have been handed seemingly impossible tasks and situations this year and I have overcome! In my baking, at work, in ministry, in life…. It takes a lot of Faith to just step into the deep waters but the growth that springs from that is exponential! I do not say I can’t anymore! It is crazy and scary but it is true!! I can! You can! I heard that we only use 3% of our brains!!! 3%?? Imagine what we can do with just 10%!! Don’t stop at dreaming!! Seek God in your dreams and go forth!!! The results will shock you! I cannot finish all the lessons. There are many many more like laugh a lot, cry if you want to, forgive easily, don’t run away from love, feel pain when it comes but don’t let it kill you, be careful about people who surround you and speak over your life, ask God for wisdom in every situation, take walks alone once in a while because nature is one of God’s languages, take care of your body….

I thank God for life and for 2014! 2015 will have many changes in my life…unexpected ones…surprises. I am excited all the same! Enjoy the holiday people and keep your heads up! We made it to the end of another year!!! \o/

Mums

Two incidents have happened in the past month or so that have left me in awe of just how short life is. We are sure of only today. Of course we are sure of forever if we believe in Jesus but I am talking about our lives in these mortal bodies. Two friends of mine lost their mothers. I have written severally about just how death is a mystery to me. I cannot begin to imagine the loss of a mother. It must be one of the most painful experiences ever! The last one happened overnight. They went to sleep and the mum was not unwell or in any sort of pain. She was her normal self. However, she did not wake up. Imagine that!

On the other hand, someone very close to me is pregnant. I don’t think I have been able to walk this closely with someone pregnant before. The stories are so fascinating. God’s plan for women to carry babies is just mind blowing for me. There was nothing before and now there is a heartbeat. She heard it with her husband at the doctor’s last week. Very soon we will be holding a baby. A small human being with a personality, feelings, thoughts, interests…. I downloaded an app to follow the development of the baby. There is a God in heaven people! No man could have come up with such an orderly and systematic way to form people…small people who grow into big people! 🙂 😀

Both these experiences of death and life are connected to mothers. Mothers are very very special people. They carry us in their wombs first then they carry us in their arms and then carry us in their hearts forever. Their strength is a pillar for most if not all of us. I celebrate all mothers today. I pray that we will learn to appreciate and openly love them, that we will respect them and pray for them. I pray that God will keep our mothers alive and healthy. I pray also for those who have lost their mothers. That they will find comfort in God whose love for us is more than our wildest dreams and that maybe we can also share our mothers with them!

We may not always see eye to eye but Mothers are irreplaceable!!

Motivation

Now this girl!!! I met her randomly at a wedding a few months ago. She is my hero in business. She is a self taught designer and tailor. I thought she was bluffing until she made something for me and it was perfect. No adjustments at all!

Her famous words are that business pays. She probably does not know it but she is playing a big role in encouraging me to go into full time baking! Cool peeps!

Here is the skirt she did for me. The design was mine but fabric was hers. She charged me 1200 bob for everything and had my skirt ready in time for the wedding. It took her a week 🙂

Calling ain’t eazy beazy

I see people eager to learn baking. I am excited to teach them but I sit and also wonder if they really know what it entails!!

Human beings, we always think the other person’s life is better than ours! We want to have that nice job or house or car or whatever that person we admire has. We forget though that there is a price to pay for everything. The price is different for everyone since we are all different. Let’s think of our individual personalities, callings and purposes as a currency or visa. You can only buy or enter if you have the right currency or visa. Find your country with the visa God gave you at birth. Don’t die or live a miserable life trying to forcefully copy your way into another person’s country! Let’s find ourselves and thriving will be automatic!

A case in point is myself. I have not slept well for the past 2 weeks. I have been baking endlessly and I tell you it can be exhausting! There has been like 6 cakes at a time in my small sitting room. I sincerely can’t stand cake right now. Too much of it around me has become plain yucky! The satisfaction I get however after all the work, is immeasurable! I dream of cake designs and wake up eager to replicate the dreams in my next order. I earned my full rent in one cake job today… so yes baking is awesome but make sure that it is for you because when everything else fails…the glamor, the money, the praise, the orders…only your inborn desire to do what you were born to do drives you! 🙂

This spongy cake fell as I was transferring it to the tray!! I nearly cried!! Sigh!

A replacement is in the oven right now. Failure gets me down only for a while because I can’t seem to control my urge to bake. I rise again…. God is great!!
Find your vision and RUN with it!!! :-*

My Skirt Craze

Hello Good People!!

I have not written in this section for so long. Many have asked me about my yummy and somewhat crazy skirts. Here we go 🙂

I rocked this skirt for my birthday this past Sunday. I simply love it!! 🙂

A nice vest and a belt and you look like a star!! LOL! 🙂

I bought fabric from Nairobi Textile at 1800 bob. Enough fabric remained for a knee length dress.

Fundi is Sam. He made it in a week, charged me 800 bob and he is based next to Uchumi Buruburu.

His number 0720210815.

It is perfect for this hot festive weather.

Let me share one more 🙂

Yeah. It’s the same belt. I love it. I will look for new colors.

I bought the fabric at Nairobi Textile for like 800 bob. Tie and dye is usually much cheaper…

Fundi is Esther. She is at Equity Donholm, took like 2 weeks and charged me 1800 for the skirt and a small cute coat.

Her number is 0731114371.

All the best ladies 🙂

Ndanu.
